The Humorului Monastery stands 5 km far from the town, on the Humor River valley, and dates baek from the age of Prince Alexandru cel Bun. At the time, a high official raised a stone church near an older secluded wooden conveni It was to this sacred place that Stefan cel Mare dedicated the Gospel with his face on it („The Gospel of Humor") in 1473 that is still kept in the museum of the Putna Monastery. The 15th century church could not last over the time. Later on, in 1530, chancellor Teodor Bubuiog raised the church that has lasted until today on a hill in the near region. The monument belongs to the Moldavian style that characterised Stefan cel Mare's epoch, but the builder also introduced new elements, integrated in the general architectural aspect in an original manner: the open porch, the hidden vault a new room meant to hide the treasury and the jewellery of the monastery in difficult times etc. In 1535, the inside and outside walls were painted; of great historical interest are the interior commemorative paintings of Prince Petru Rares's family and of Teodor Bubuiog's family. The complex also includes a bell tower with the watch tower that Prince Vasile Lupu raised in 1641, the surrounding walls and the cells. |
