The Moldovita Monastery was raised in 1532 and painted in 1537. It is one of the most precious mediaeval art monuments dating from Petru Rares's time. Two other churches had existed on the place of the monastery, one in wood (14th century) and one in stone (1410), the latter founded by Alexandru cel Bun.

The monastery is situated on a hill and has the aspect of a fortress. It contains the church itself, the inside wall with three massive towers on the Eastern side, the 17th century-old princely residence in the North-Western corner and the abbey in the South-Eastern side raised in the 18th-19th centuries.

The painting has great artistical value, and resembles the Voronet painting. The monastery preserves a priceless patrimony, numberless wood sculptures, such as Petru Rares's throne of the 16th century.
