Sucevita is situated at the confluence of the Sucevita River with the Voivodeasa rivulet, at 17 km from Radauti. At the end of the 16"' century the Sucevita Monastery was raised here; it was to become the most fortified monastery complex in Moldova whose precincts hid the Movilesti family and their fabulous fortune. The Moldavian plan with the porch, the pronaos, the nave and the altar is influenced by the Southem architecture. Brothers Ion and Sofronie painted the exterior walls in a narrative style. Red and green are the dominant colours. The tombs of the high officials Ieremia and Simion Movila are inside the church. The museum exhibits embroideries, silverware, folk paintings and old books that certify Sucevita's cultural role in the region.
Another historical monument stands near the village cemetery: a stone church and a beli tower, both raised in 1772 and preserving the Moldavian architectural styles. |
